Royal Ascot

The benchmark of racing as a social and sporting occasion: Group 1 quality every day, a strict Royal Enclosure and record crowds in 2026.

Why it is here

The 2026 meeting drew 294,541 people over five days, up 2.8% on 2025, and a record 634 runners (Thoroughbred Daily News, 2026-06-20). Aidan O'Brien reached 100 Royal Ascot winners in the Gold Cup with Scandinavia, and Coolmore set a record of eight winners as leading owner (TDN). Sporting Life's review (2026-06-23) describes guests from 76 countries, 8,000 staff and 1,300 media, an invitation-only Royal Enclosure with top hat and tails, and the King and Queen's carriage procession; it also notes an uncomfortably busy grandstand on the busiest days. In the IFHA's 2025 Top 100 Group 1 ranking, the Prince of Wales's Stakes placed 8th (122.25), with the St James's Palace Stakes, Queen Anne Stakes, Gold Cup and Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Stakes also in the list (IFHA, 2026-01-20). Score drivers: social 9.9 from the crowd figures, the royal procession and the international guest list; exclusivity 9.6 from the invitation-only Royal Enclosure and its dress code; prestige 9.8 from the depth of Group 1 races in the IFHA list; sporting level 9.3, because its best race ranked 8th rather than 1st in 2025; experience 9.2, held back by the grandstand crowding Sporting Life describes.
